      Hey! I’m Felipe, I finished last year my PhD on Sweet corn postharvest quality. I got to travel to California, Senegal, and Spain for fieldwork!

      Now, I am a scientist working and living in London. I love doing crafts, sewing, and upcycling furniture. I speak English and Spanish as I was born in the south of Spain.

      Vertical farming plant scientist.
      I work carrying out trials with different crops, lighting, irrigation etc. I’m a farmer in Central London!!

      – Design, plan and carry out trials to test and assess relevant aspects.

      – Collect samples and generate data sets.

      – Provide physiological context and interpretations of the results.

      – Generate necessary resources as part of the handover procedure for new farms.

      – Elaborate on relevant documentation to fulfil client requirements.

      – Test the facilities to ensure operational standards are suitable.

      – Identify areas of interest for Research & Development.

    • My Typical Day:

      Last year I got into going to the gym in the morning (crazy right?) I wake up at 6:30 go to the gym and by 9:00am I’m at work. I check the plants growing on the system and then I get going with whatever needs doing that day; more sowing, adjusting trials, and harvesting.

    • What I'd do with the prize money:

      If I win the price money I would organise an Open day at Vertical Future to show the farm to students. And I promise to spend the 500 in food for the visitors!!!!

      I went to School and Uni in Spain.

      I did my undergrad in Biology (University of Seville) , then a Masters in Crop Biology (University of Barcelona & University of Southampton), Followed by a PhD (University of Southampton & University of California)

    • Work History:

      I was a Kitchen Porter in a Thai restaurant (Delicious Pad Thai)

      I worked in LIDL (delicious Croissants)

      Then I volunteered in the Uni as a Lab assistant

      My previous job was as a Process technologist designing products for supermarkets (pre-cut vegetables and salads)

      Now a Scientist at Vertical Future
