This depends on the species but often can be a week in duration when left on the plant. If removed it is important to cut the stem and quickly place into water, so transpiration can continue.

Some flowers don’t last very long at all and the best thing to do is leave them on the plant. Others last much longer, for example carnations still look good after a couple of weeks in a vase. Someone told me a good trick is to put some lemonade in the vase – why don’t you try it and see!

Plans can live for quite a while, many years. However the flower itself may only be around for a few weeks, waiting for pollination. At the moment you may see lots of bright yellow daffodil flowers. I have some in our garden, but I didn’t plant them. They “flower” every year at around this time, and then they look like they’ve disappeared, only to reappear next year.

This is species dependant, however Chrysanthemums are one of the longest lasting vase based flower (great as a present).
